We instructed a workshop titled “All Individual Consumption is a Design Production” as part of the “bi’suru” design event organized at Yıldız Technical University, Faculty of Architecture, between February 4th and 9th, 2013. The workshop engaged in a series of discussions and studio work under the theme of “transformation”.
The conceptions of “production” and “consumption” –one deriving from the word “take” and the other from “bring”- exhibit a dichotomy much more resilient and acute than what the merely deed correlated opposition of these words suggest. Today, we are at a turning point where this fabricated conceptual polarity between the “consumer” and “producer” is rendered obsolete. Recognition of the producer as the subject/author and the consumer as the ordinary individual/masses shall awake hesitation.
“All Individual Consumption is a Design Production” took the usual and conventional, yet innovative transformation of randomly “designed” objects and evaluated them as upgrades to their original forms.
During the 4-day-period of the workshop, the constructs re-designed during their use were “mockumented” and shown as final products of mass-production and marketing services.
